SIPI FALLS HIKE
SIPI FALLS – A natural wonder
Sipi Falls is one of Uganda’s most popular destinations. Surrounded by a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, the three waterfalls drop majestically over stunning rocky cliffs. The three waterfalls vary, the most prominent difference being the height.
The name Sipi comes from a plant that grows by the river. Behind this name is an interesting story you’ll hear among others as you go on the Sipi Falls hike with us.
The Sipi Falls hike is a great casual adventure that takes 3 or 4 hours. During the Sipi Falls Hike, you get to visit the three waterfalls and explore them up close. Enjoy the thunderous sound of water as you savor the beautiful views. You can descend to the bases of the falls for more fun.
The first waterfall is magnificent. Brilliant white water disappears after falling over an 85-meter cliff before reappearing a few meters away. The water captivates you as it gushes over huge rocks and flows downstream. This waterfall has amazing spots for photographing.
The second waterfall, which is 65m tall, has a cascade and small pools before the waterfall. There are safe places to see and touch the water. Also, one can swim in the pools. The water falls onto large black rocks at the entrance of a small cave. Explore the cave and get to know the amazing history it holds.
The third or main waterfall is a brilliant spectacle dropping over 100m. It’s easily accessible from most of the resorts in Sipi. During the Sipi Falls hike, you may only see it from the top.
If you want to trek to the bottom, we can arrange that for you. Another amazing opportunity is to abseil to the bottom and hike back.
THE SIPI FALLS HIKE
The Sipi Falls hike starts from your place of residence or point of arrival in Sipi and brings you to the first waterfall, from where you’ll descend to the other falls. The hike is moderately challenging, with trails that go over steep slopes at certain points.
However, there are slightly flat areas at the tops of every steep slope where you can catch your breath and take in the spectacular views of the hills, valleys, and the land below. The higher you go, the more you see.
Making your way through the community trails, you’ll meet the people of Sipi going about their days. Subsistence farming is the most common activity, so you’ll see lots of plantations and people in them. The warm and hospitable people of Sipi may say “hello” to you, especially the young children. You might hear the word ‘muzungu’, which loosely refers to foreigners or tourists.
The rugged terrain will give you a good workout. You may get tired if you’re not used to hiking, but there are easier options for those who are not in the best shape.
While you hike with our amazing guides, they’ll tell you all about Sipi and its people. Get to know the interesting history of the Sabiny and Bagisu people who live in Sipi Falls. Discover how the physical features have benefited them, and influenced the relationships with neighboring tribes like the Karamojong.
If you wish, you can use a vehicle or bike to get to the 1st falls and then later slope down to the rest. Unfortunately, you’ll miss out on adventures that make the Sipi Falls Hike worthwhile.
THE UPPER LOOP OF SIPI FALLS
The upper loop of Sipi Falls provides a wider view and more adventure. You can see the Karamoja plains, some mountain ranges, and a peak of Mount Elgon National Park. It’s not part of the Sipi Falls hike, but can be included if you desire.
BEST TIME TO VISIT SIPI FALLS
If you visit Sipi Falls during the rainy season, you’ll have a more challenging hike but will find a huge volume of water at the falls. This gives you a more splendid view. The slippery and muddy trails create a more adventurous feel. Those who love challenging themselves will enjoy this.
However, not all the days in the wet season are rainy. If you’re lucky, you may see a wondrous waterfall without many of the season’s challenges.
In the dry season, the water volume is lesser, but it doesn’t make the falls less beautiful. The climb is fairly easy on the dry trails which makes this a great time to visit. The dry months are June to August and December to February.
We highly recommend you take the Sipi Falls hike in the morning. Sometimes the weather can be unpredictable.
Due to high elevation of around 1800m asl, sometimes it can be quite cold in Sipi, so carry along some extra warm clothes, especially if you’re visiting during the wet season.
There is no age requirement for the Sipi Falls hike, as it is very family friendly. It’s a great trip for both beginners and seasoned hikers.
